internet connection sharing through bridge

hi all i'm hoping someone knows if this is possible..but i would like to know if it is possible to share a ppp0 internet connection without being forced to use the ip 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 between a bridged network...currently my setup is redhat 7 with a slow isa modem at 192.168.1.1 with a crossover cable to a dual boot redhat 9 /win xp bridged ip of 192.168.1.22 with a winmodem that get's 4.5 or higher ppp connections which in turns connects to a third machine libranet with an ip of 192.168.1.2 ...my current setup has the first machine (redhat 7) as the internet connection.. but i would like to say dual boot into redhat 9 and and connect with the winmodem sometimes to get the higher speed without altering my ips..while sharing the bandwidth...thanks all

Hi, I had a similar problem on my Suse 9 box.
I am no guru or expert but I found that although doable, bridging is not really a solution. You should use routing instead, espcially if you want to use IP numbers other than the 192.168 range. You can still do IP masquerading etc and end up with a more secure network. netconfig will get you started.
If you really need to bridge, brctl will get you going. It will allow you to assign IP's and create a virtual bridge between the network cards.

yes i already have that going but i encounter serveral problems.....i have a working fowarding script in the rh7 box that works .. except for redhat 9 ..works in xp though..the whole network is up and running with bandwidth from the internet if i boot my bridged machine into xp..however redhat 9 when running abridge cant' get online that way..it'll pass the forwarding but not connect itself..maybe a firewall problem or no nameserver assigned to the bridge..

No name server will definately get you into trouble. The DNS entries have to be in there for it to work

hmm been struggling with this one for way too long.. i'm thinking its not a nameserver problem...i run a script in rc.d.rclocal for my bridge to come up right away..but if i do a "ifconfig br0 192.168.1.1" and run a share script" the redhat 9 machine with the winmodem gets connected and so does the debian machine..but then i can't ssh to my REAL 192.168.1.1..confusing..the other way around works though but not in redhat9(if i boot in xp) ..strange all my hosts are listed and resolv.conf have all ips and nameserver...hmmmmmmm..puzzled..still would be nice to know if its possible to share a connection from an ip other than 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

Have you configed the bridge with brctl and turned it on? brctl <bridgename> up

I found a cool howto on this issue. I will dig it up and post the url for you.

in the mean time try reassigning the ip to the NICs in question and rebuild the bridge using brctl. Make sure that eth0 and 1 are DOWN when you do it otherwise it wont work!

You can't use brctl with ppp0. It just doesn't like ppp. The ppp daemon does most of the work internally. I'm currently trying to figure out a way around that to bridge eth0 and ppp0.
