Intermittent nfs errors

Using Gentoo, I am having a problem with nfs mounts.

Here are the relavent listings in my /etc/fstab file:

pear:/mnt/gentoo/portage /usr/portage nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192 0 0
pear:/mnt/gentoo/Athlon-XP /usr/portage/packages/All nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192 0 0

Most of the time everything works fine. Every once in a while, I have a problem with only the 2nd entry.

I get this message when emerging:

mv: can't stat '/usr/portage/packages/All'

ls /usr/portage/packages/All

gives permission denied (I'm running as root).

umount /usr/portage/packages/All
mount /usr/portage/packages/All

fixes the problem for a while.

No relavent error messages in server logs.

Possible related errors in client logs:

localhost kernel: nfs warning: mount version older than kernel
localhost rpc.mountd: Caught signal 15, un-registering and exiting.

Anybody have a clue as to what the problem is?

Bill
