how to compile kernel to support ipchains?

hi all! I am using linux slackware. I am going to use IP firewalling with ipchains; So when I try to play with this utility, it seems my kernell does not support it. It says something like 'kernel incompatible with this protocol', when I try ipchains -L command, etc ...

I know I might have to rebuild my kernel to support ip filtering, does anybody could please give me a course on this ...

Thanks!

u just need to open up the current config file of ur present linux distro in the kernel source and then in the networking support u can get ipchains sypprt
enable that and compile ur kernel

is there a particular reason why you want to use ipchains instead of iptables???

just curious...

masand - thanx alot (%

win32sux - I dont know why it's ipchains, if iptables are also ok, I will take it ...

... also I have noticed that iptables work on my system, I guess I'll choose them instead ...
could you give me a simple tutorial url how to configure iptables to have a fine firewall against external world ...?

http://iptables-tutorial.frozentux.n...-tutorial.html

http://www.linuxguruz.com/iptables/

ipchains is what was used back in the linux 2.2 days...

since linux 2.4 iptables has been the norm...

this is the official iptables (netfilter) website:

http://www.netfilter.org/

just my two cents...

you're very welcome... BTW, there's also a small iptables wiki right here on LQ:
