How can I connect a linux box to a WIN. XP (pro) machine directly?

Hi. I am setting up a linux box to do a periodic backup of some files on a Windoze XP pro. machine. The XP machine is on a wireless network, so it's ethernet port is free.

How do I configure the eth0 network interface on my linux box for a direct connection to the XP machine's ethernet port so that I can access the files to be backed up via. SAMBA?

Thanks.

Yes, just usr SAMBA. Use the same range of IPs, for example 100.100.0.1 and 100.100.0.2, and use the same domain name for your LAN. This should work directly.

Should I set the eth_0 interface to a static IP? or will it be able to reach the DHCP server (the wireless router which gives the XP box its IP address?). Or should I configure the linux box as a DHCP server to assign the XP box's ethernet card an IP?

If you want to set up just a LAN between these two computers then I would suggest to set a static IP to your Ethernet. The wireless is for internet connection or what? The IP of the Wireless card and the one of the Ethernet can be different. Even with DHCP should work.
