Question FTPs for Newbies

Well, if you're reading this, mircea, thanks- I've got my Linux box recognizing loading tulip on boot now. Anyway, I'm trying to get an FTP up via ws-ftp. On our home lan, I can access it (192.168.1.102) no problem. However, my girlfriend and two other friends report no such luck, and can't even get a return on ping. I can ping it, and it can ping my other computers, though.

Heres the specifics:

-RoadRunner cable
-3Com cable modem
-Linksys BEFSR41 4-port router
-RedHat 7.2
-ws-ftp (just set the daemon to run on boot, no other settings defined or anything)

Any ideas? Is it Linux, the router, or both?

I would suggest finding out more about your Linksys router. I am having the same problem going through my linux router box. If you can acces it from the local lan then that means the ftp server is up and working fine. I have successfully ran an ftp server from my computer over RoadRunner. They have to access the ftp server from your ext IP address not the local 192... number. If you don't know what it is go to www.grc.com and there is a port probe section that will return you rip for you.

make sure you open port 21 on the router for 192.168.1.102.
This will open the ftp port for that address.

also, you will have to enter the IP address (or name if you have one) that is assigned to you by your cable provider to access your machine from the outside world.
