We have a squid proxy server running and is working fine.
Our client PCs need to download some updates and connect to other "FTP" servers on the Net ---- But are not able to do so.
I tried googling and found some information regarding the fix of this issue. Some suggested using iptables, some told to use some thing called "ftp-proxy". Unfortunately none worked and the result is zero.
We definitely need squid as many other things like bandwidth management, content filtering have been integrated to it.
Is there any way our client PCs can use ftp from command line or through programs ?
well you've really not described what happens when things don't work, but squid IS an ftp proxy so it's just down to configuring and using it correctly...
Well, nothing happens when a client tries to contact any ftp server on the NET.
After some time it simply says : Unknown host.
What understanding I have about squid proxy is that this is a http proxy and ftp functions are supported through browser only. These things are happening correctly. The issue arises when a client tries to connect to any ftp server through command line or through any program requiring ftp access.
squid doesn't care (i.e has no idea) if you are using a browser or a command line in the slightest. if you have a command line, then you'd probably be using the ftp_proxy environmental variable to make curl, wget or a similar tool explicitly go to the proxy for ftp transactions.
