Question Do I leave primary and seconday DNS blank for a DNS Server?

Hi,

I'm now running test setups for a new DNS server running RH9. I'm new to Linux so I'm running the initial setup in graphical mode. However, I will not install any GUI as this server will be used as a DNS server and I don't want any unnecessary programs or services to run or even be on the server.

My question is during initial setup, the setup screen is asking for primary and secondary DNS server info. I believe I leave them blank. Is this correct?

you can put in 127.0.0.1 which means the resolver will look at the same system it is running on to resolve domain names.

I can't tell which setup screen you are referring to. But if you expect this system to be able to resovle any DNS queries, then you NEED to specfy a primary/seconday name server. These enrties will be added to /etc/resolv.conf. If you want your system to use the name server you are setting up, then I alway specify localhost as the primary.

If you are referring to specifying NS records for your zone files, then you need to state that in your post. Those entries are totally different.

Thanks

Thanks. Then I'll use 127.0.0.1 and leave secondary blank.
