DNS server configuration


Hi ,

i am struggling with dns server!

i reffered many sites ! presently i am working on suse10.1!

can any one send me example of how to configure dns server!

when we make changes in gui is it necessary to make changes in /etc/named.conf???

i have ping every computer with their hostnames but not with ip-address!

please help me!!

please give detailed configuration with an example!! i will be very thank ful to u!

If you want a straightforward DNS server you can use YaST. The SuSE help reference (chapter 40 on 10.0) tells you how to set it up. You do need to know what you're doing so you may need to look up some basics and also check out the documentation and examples in /usr/share/doc/packages/bind

Once you've got it working using YaST you can look at the named.conf files and zone files (/var/lib/named/master/.. . If you do need to amend named.conf manually don't use YaST again as it will trash any settings it doesn't understand. Similarly if editing zone files manually stop the DNS server before editing.

If you want DDNS (eg getting DHCP server to update DNS server with client info) then you can set up the basic DNS server in YaST and test it to make sure it works. From then on it's manual editing of various conf files, generating security keys and you have to use 'rndc freeze zonename' before editing zone files.

Hi!
I want setup DHCP under windows 2003 Server and i don't have any idea how.
Can anyone help?
I want to setup DHCP and DNS for e-mail and internet distribution under Suse 10.0
