Theres not alot of info to go on here...

When you say ,"i get the output as some ip address which is not my linux box ip address and i get the local loopback address " do you mean you see an IP address similar to yours, for example: you ip may be 192.168.1.113 and you see in the table 192.168.1.0?

If so thats your network, its supposed to be that way. Make sure your subnet mask is right. The only reason you should get dest unreachable is when your trying to ping a network that from a node with no gateway eg.. the gateway address is on a different subnet..

you should also see 0.0.0.0 x.x.x.x 0.0.0.0 at the bottom of the table ( the x.x.x.x represents your gateway ip addr), if you don't, you have no default gateway..

you can add one by typing the following at the command line.
ip route add default via x.x.x.x

again x.x.x.x represents your gateway..

Hope it helps..
