Debian DHCP/DNS issues...
I just got hold of a Netgear MA314 DSL router but I need some help ironing out a few issues. Heres the story...
I am using the router to act as a DHCP and DNS server for the the 3 machines I have in my network. Initially all 3 machines were running Win 2K Pro and everything was fine. All machines were registered in the DHCP table and DNS lookup was working. The machines could ping each other by hostname and IP address.
I have now installed a basic Debian 3.0 install on one of the machines to act as a server. After the install the machine connected to the network OK and I was able to ping all machines by IP address.
OK, here are the problems:
1) The Debian machine does not register its hostname in the DHCP table. The hostname is simply blank against the machines IP address.
I had a look around a few sites and discovered that I needed to change the /etc/dhclient.conf file to send the hostname option. This change now registers the hostname in the DHCP table. Is this the correct thing to do? It seems a bit odd that the hostname set for the system is not sent automatically?
2) The Debian box is unable to use DNS lookup. If I ping by hostname I get an unknown host error. /etc/resolv.conf has a nameserver entry for the address of the router. Also, even though the hostname is now registered in the DHCP table the Win2K boxes can't find the Debian box by hostname.
I don't know if 1 and 2 are related or separate but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
