Config problem: "Authorization failed: server rejected access" -- help please!

Hi all.

I've googled until I'm blue in the face but I'm stuck on a CVS problem and I'm looking for help please. I've got a new CVS installation on RH7.2 which rejects all attempts to login, throwing back a cheery:
cvs login: authorization failed: server takaido2 rejected access to /home/cvsroot for user tim

I can telnet to port 2401, so I believe it's a cvs problem rather than xinetd. In my /home/cvsroot/CVSROOT/passwd file I've got:
anonymous::cvs
cco::cvs
tim:
cvs:PzbzKS8u0C9cE
The users `cvs' and `tim' exist on the box, and both are members of the group `cvs'. I have done a:
$ cd /home/cvsroot
$ chown -R :cvs CVSROOT/
$ chmod -R 775 CVSROOT/

...but the problem remains, and now I'm stuck! Any suggestions to get me out of this hole please? Thanks aplenty.

SECOND WORRY (NOT NECESSARILY CRITICAL THOUGH):
There may also be a problem at the xinetd level: if I do a
$ xinetd -filelog /etc/testfilelog
and examine the file created, I see this (the last line looks worrying):

However, a quick:
$ netstat -anp | grep 2401
gives me:
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:2401 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 785/xinetd
which, I believe, means that xinetd is listening on port 2401 as required. In which case, what does the above error mean?
