Angry "Can't initialize iptables" message at boot

I upgraded from 2.4 to 2.6 and now i am getting 3 failed messages at boot saying that the os can not initialize the iptables. oddly enough, once i get into the os i can modprobe ip_tables and not get any kind of error and the service shows up under lsmod? Is there something i need to edit that calls an incorrect service name or something? I have scowered the net for most of the afternoon and all i find is either "recompile" or "i fixed it, but i don't know what i did" kind of messages. Thanks for any help.

You said loading the module(s) caused there to be no errors. Maybe you don't have automatic module loading compiled into the kernel. I think the solution may be to load the appropriate iptables modules before running any iptables startup scripts. You may put the commands inside the iptables script, at or near the top.
