Can't bring up Ethernet

I have two Linux (Redhat 8.0) machines right next to each other, connected with a reverse ethernet cable. Both machines can boot Windows, also, and I can network them with Windows. So the cable works and the ethernet cards work.

But with Linux, eth0 fails at boot time, and trying to activate it with SYSTEM SETTINGS --> NETWORK DEVICE CONTROL (as suggested by the documentation) also fails.

Not sure where to start -- all suggestions gratefully accepted.

What does the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 look like. Stupid question but is it maybe set up for dhcp?

Hmmmm....interesting. I thought that during the installation I had said it would not be dhcp. But ifcfg-eth0 reads:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOT=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes

What should I change it to???

Nevermind.....I think I have it figured out. Your answer seems to have pointed me toward the problem, and I thank you.
