You don't need to be using an uplink port. Just connecting the two computers to normal ports is fine. Have you assigned the Windows 2000 machine a static ip address?
Uplink ports are intended to connect to another switch.
I've tried without the uplink and I've got the same problem. It seems like a configuration problem. I've assigned a static IP address to the windows 2000 machine, and made the default gateway the same IP address as eth0 on the gateway box.
And you still can't ping the gateway box on its eth0 ip? Try, as root on the gateway, 'tcpdump -n -vvv | grep icmp' and see if the pings show up at all.
Good news I got the computer on the network. I had to change the subnet of the internal interface on the gateway box. I had the internal and external on the following subnets 192.168.1.x. I switched the internal to 192.168.2.x and left the external the same and everything works.....
Thanks for the help with this Matir I really appreciate it!
Now time to figure out how to do a network install of gentoo..............Any tips?
I saw the Grub4DOS method and I'm going to give that a shot. Hopefully I can get it to work. If that doesn't work I won a CD-ROM on ebay and that is coming soon
I really appreciate all the help you have given me. Now on to the really tough part. Installing Gentoo............
