apache login to home directories

hi there,

i've set up apache and i've got my 'Managing linux systems with webmin' by Bruce Perens' sitting in front of me i've pretty much gine threw everything on apache and it's all setup and read to go, but i didn't get out of it one of the things i was hoping for. i want to be able to set up apache so when i'm at home wants to click on the work website i can then choose to log into my home directory with a password and username and see all the files located in my /home/username folder.

i've managed to allow anyone to see the index.htm file in the /home/username/public_html file by useing the http://linuxserver/~username fuction. but i was wanting on the owner of the home directory to be able to sign in using his unix password and then get a list of all his files.

can someone help me with this?

This would be quite a dangerous thing to do as it would be very vulnerable to attack. There are alternative ways of doing this outside of apache. My first suggestion would be if both systems are Linux based that you can open port 22 and use sftp. I would suggest having RSA keys to ensure absolute security. You could use an ftp client like KBear on KDE which would connect to the server remotely and be able to browse the folders and transfer files. You could also do a sftp into the system using any browser to browse the folders. Konqueror uses the command fish://<ip_address or server_name if resolved>. Neither of these have anything to do with apache since apache is really designed for serving up html based pages.

Edit: appears that Firefox does not support sftp protocols (unless there is a way to turn it on) but Konqueror uses either fish:// as above or sftp://user_name@ip_address
