A Question on the Tor Network

Hey guys, i was going to post this in the Slackware section like usual but though network would be a better place.

I've just installed and started using the Tor section on my Slack13.1 , XFCE box. When i connect to the tor network, do ALL my packets go through it ??? I understand that Firefox runs through Tor, but say if i were to open a terminal and ping 10.10.10.10 would that communication run through the Tor network or is it only firefox? thanks guys.

Noob question but im completely new to Tor.

Thanks guys

Only the traffic from firefox will use the tor network.
You can however use torify to make various programs use Tor as a proxy.

Kind regards

You can use proxychains to get other programs to use Tor. Browsers when set to use the Tor for connections will route traffic via Tor but you will need to change certain settings to get the DNS lookups to go through Tor as well. There's information on how to do this on the pages repo linked to. You can use tor-resolve to get the ip addresses for other services such as an ssh connection. Again, this is because even when using Tor via proxychains or such like, for example to do an anonymous ssh connection, the DNS request still goes to your DNS provider - usually your ISP. Whereas tor-resolv will resolve an ip address without doing this. If you want to be really anonymous using a public wireless access point, blocking cookies and spoofing your Mac address is the ultimate safest option for the really paranoid. Don't forget that even when using Tor the first part of the connection and all traffic goes via your ISP onto the Tor network. Also as the traffic through Tor is passed around through a third party network I wouldn't do anything like online banking over it. Maybe that's just me being paranoid!
