2 machines having same private IP in a LAN?

Hi, this is not a problem but I am just curious about what will happen if someone set 2 machines to have the same IP address in a LAN, without a DHCP server?

Here's what it looks like on my FC6 box.
You might also get the situation where it boots the original connection. Happens all the time with our barcode scanners.
Code:
Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ]
Bringing up interface eth0: Error, some other host already uses address 192.168.1.4.
                                                           [FAILED]
