*newbie* ftp question involving remote access

Hey!

I just setup my ftp server that works locally around the house, so I can share files between different computers, yet I would like to be able to make this server remotely accessible.
* used vsftpd to setup ftp server
* have bellsouth ISP (I don't think they block port 21) w/ Dynamic IP
* have Linksys Router that assigns local ip's: 10.10.10.10* (dynamic also)
* I don't care about having hostname at this point (the IP address would work fine for me)
* I've tried UPnP Forwarding FTP port 21to the correct destination (10.10.10.100), but it doesn't seem to affect the process of getting it to connect remotely

I've also heard about using proxies in order to bypass an ISP's blocking of certain ports (I don't know if I have this issue yet). Can someone please get me started on this delemia of mine? I've search for about 3 hours and I'm tired of not knowing where to begin.

Thanks!

Don't know if this will help but I seem to recall that the IP address 10 can only be accessed by an internal network .

Also check if your router has a firewall, you may need to open up port 21 on it.

A quick way to see whats visible to the net is to use ShieldsUP at grc.com(?)

I assume by remote access you mean externally right? Unless you know the IP address of your outbound connection whenever you want to connect it is almost impossible to do. Look into dyndns.com. They let you have a domain name on a static IP address.

Yes, I meant externally, so that WAN's can connect to my computer that is my personal LAN.

Someone's PC ------> WWW ------> ISP Provider ------> Router ------> My PC ------> My stuff in my PC

It works fine locally on my LAN. For example, I can type: "ftp://10.10.10.100" in any brower and it connects perfectly from all of the computers in my house. I just need some help getting it to work by using the IP dynamically assigned from my ISP, so external users can temporarily access it. Getting that particular IP address is just a matter of going to whatismyip.com .... it isn't that big of a deal for me, since I only want like one person to have external access to the server.

Thanks!

except that if you are outside your LAN, whatismyip.com won't help you. Dyndns.com still seems like the way to got, a script can be setup to check your IP address periodically, then update it on thei dyndns servers.
