The G1 is a great device. I've had one for about 3 months, and my fiancée got one the day it came on the market. It has a custom API, but uses Java syntax for development. It does have some of the standard Java libs, but you'll have to learn the API to get anything done. For me, it's the best phone I've ever owned.

Does anyone own an unlocked htc magic(G2 or ion)? I am thinking about purchasing one on ebay and I was wondering if I would have any problems with the ota update for android? I am currently on the at&t iphone 3g network and I know that google produces the updates ota or over the air. Would I still be able to receive updates via wifi no matter what network and what type of phone I have? Also would this be the same for an htc hero when it is available unlocked? This would be a deal breaker for me.

Go with an unlocked nokia s60 phone.

Can't speak much about android, but if you're looking for a solid smart phone, definitely look into symbian.
