How to run Linux on an smashed screen laptop?

I have a perfectly fine laptop that has a smashed screen 🙂

Can I install Linux onto a USB stick and run with an attached monitor?
How can I 'preconfigure' and instruct that the display output should be to attached monitor only.

I'm guessing this is possible.
Can someone point me where to look for instructions?

Thanks.

The method is different for different distributions of Linux. What are you planning to install on the lappy?

If Ubuntu, I think this will help you:

If something else, let us know what distro you plan on using.

With my old Dell running Fedora, the external screen came up automatically. Have you tried ?.
I would expect all laptops to have a "Monitor" function key.

I once installed Linux whith the internal monitor broken, and an external monitor attached, and it worked OK.
If you already installed and don't want to reinstall, I think a kernel command line option (via grub likely) would be the way to go.
