Enabled USB debugging on Android phone, but can't connect

On Manjaro, I'm trying to add my physical Android device, a Samsung Galaxy J7 (SM-J727U, Android v8.1) to the android studio device list, but whenever I plug my phone in via USB, it doesn't see it at all.

I've installed the following packages trying to get it to work (they are all still installed)

android-sdk-platform-tools
android-tools
android-udev
libmtp
gvfs-mtp

I've enabled developer options and USB debugging on my phone. In settings->USB configuration, MTP is checked.

Whenever I plug my phone in via USB, it just goes into charging mode. There's no notification that I see where I can change it to MTP after I plug it in.

I've added myself to the adbusers group, logged out of XFCE, and logged back in again. I've restarted my phone.

The output of `mtp-detect` shows that "no raw devices found."

I was reading through https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Android_Debug_Bridge and found my problem to be that I was using a cable without a data pin (a charging-only cable).

Almost working now, though 'adb devices' showing it as unauthorized.

You need to remove any device information ADB has stored, and then, when you next plug it in, the phone will ask if you want to allow the computer to connect to it, and you have to agree, then it is authorised and ADB and Fastboot will work

I had to revoke the USB Debugging Authorizations in the phone's developer options, then re-enable debugging. Then I got prompted to allow my PC. And all is well.

I also removed 2 of the packages I had installed: android-file-transfer and gvfs-mtp. Seems they weren't needed in this case.

Welcome to LQ @Fearless Fred
