Can't get android phone to list "telegram" as an SMS app...

...so I can't make it the default.
Anybody know why?

You don't provide much information. Not the brand, model, Android version, nothing. So I have no idea why.

Try this method

Open the Settings on your phone
Tap Apps & notifications
Tap Advanced
Tap Default apps
Tap SMS app
Tap the app you want to switch to.
Tap OK

That works on my Pixel3. But on my wife's Samsung, it's different. It depends on the phone make and model. I have no clue what the OP's phone might be. And I don't know how to set it on most of the phones out there. The phone's manual might provide some guidance, though.
