If Linux Mint let you (I don't use Linux Mint), right click on the 'USB Stick Formatter' icon/shortcut and click on 'Edit Application...' (or something similar) to see what it say in the Command box. That will be its 'recognizable name' to use in terminal.

When formatting a SD card on your computer, the card is not supposed to be mounted. Unmount but don't eject it. But all this efforts won't matter if you don't see your card in 'fdisk -l' as root.
Code:
fdisk -l
If you just plugged it in, your card's entry will usually be the last one in the result of 'fdisk -l'. Unplug the card from your computer and rerunning 'fdisk -l' to see if the card is still in the result. If it's not in the result, that's your card.

If it worked to reformat the SD memory card in-camera, that is the best path to take. I've been doing that method for years. I find it best to let the camera decide the file system format rather than fight the camera for it.

Unmounted card and using root privileges, The USB Stick Formatter still does not work. Right clicking formatter icon in mint does not offer "Edit Application" Did find out I can format the card w/fdisk. Will format from the camera next time as suggested now that I know how to get to the correct drop down.

I find it annoying the the "official" name of some applications are not disclosed. I have run into this before when trying to open some of them from the command line.

Look at at the menu items, there are text files somewhere containing the command line. For instance, I use OpenBox, my menu is in ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml.
But you do not need this formatter, plug your card in, run 'fdisk -l' to see whether it has partition or not and then format it. 'mkfs.vfat /dev/sdX' in case there is no partition, 'mkfs.vfat /dev/sdX1' in case it is partitioned.

'USB Stick Formatter' is apparently mintstick. This bug report link seems relevant to your issue. The bug report referenced another bug report and I've pointed the link to a specific reply here. If I'm understanding the bug reports correctly, it seems to me that the GUI side of mintstick is not seeing the SD cards.
