Now change the command in the desktop shortcut so it reads (replace "paxolin" with your username for all three occurrences):

Code:
sh -c '/home/paxolin/tor/tor-browser_en-US/Browser/start-tor-browser --detach || ([ ! -x /home/paxolin/tor/tor-browser_en-US/Browser/start-tor-browser ] && /home/paxolin/tor/tor-browser_en-US/start-tor-browser --detach)' dummy %k
Once that has been done and the shortcut has been closed again, try double clicking on it.
That's weird. When I went to edit it, now it has different text in there:
Code:
sh -c '"$(dirname "$*")"/Browser/start-tor-browser --detach || ([ ! -x "$(dirname "$*")"/Browser/start-tor-browser ] && "$(dirname "$*")"/start-tor-browser --detach)' dummy %k
How did that happen I wonder? So I've not changed or done anything so far.

Please change the entire command in the shortcut for the new command that I posted.

Right, done that.
I've just tried it, and Tor runs successfully now.
Is there any more to do? Will it update automatically now?

You can update from the browser itself (Help->About Tor Browser).

I don't actually use Tor, but I think it may also notify you if you're using the browser and it knows you're using an outdated version.

Ok, I didn't know if it updated automatically from a repository? No problem.

Thanks again for all the "tireless" help - you can get some more kip now!

Well, there's actually 2 components - Tor and the Tor Browser.

Tor, since you installed it through the Tor repo, will now update itself through that repo.

You'll update Tor Browser through the browser.

I had a bad night's sleep last night so kip is very much on the cards!

Enjoy Tor.
