systemctl nvidia_persistenced missing errors

Hi,

Yesterday all was OK. This morning when I logged on I got a blank screen after seeing the LinuxMint splash screen.

I switched to vt1 (and 2 and 3...) to see what was happening, and got an endless flood of error messages from systemctl complaining that nvidia_persistenced was missing.

I can ignore the flood of messages and login, and use startx to get a desktop, but things are flaky. If I switch to another vt and switch back, I lose the desktop. Then all vts show the flood but the browser I had running continued running.

I created a link (details lost) to /usr/bin/nvidia_persistenced and rebooted. That at least got rid of the flood of messages long enough to easily login. However that did not last. The next time I rebooted I got a flood of messages again, this time for nvidia_persistenced.service. /lib/systemd/system/nvidia_persistenced.service does exist.

Can I do without nvidia_persistenced, as using startx implies? If so, how do I stop systemctl from trying to start it?

Could this problem be due to a bad update?
I'm using LinuxMint 17.3 Rosa.

Thanks
Jim

I mis-read the error message. It is /bin/systemctl that is missing.
Code:
/ # ls /bin/systemctl
ls: cannot access /bin/systemctl: No such file or directory
/ # apt-get install systemctl
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package systemctl
/ # apt-get install systemd
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package systemd is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  systemd-services:i386 systemd-services

E: Package 'systemd' has no installation candidate
/ # apt-get install systemd-services
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

systemd-services is already the newest version.
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 11 not to upgrade.
/ # dpkg -i systemd-services
dpkg: error processing archive systemd-services (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
 systemd-services
/ # updatedb
/ # locate systemd-services
/usr/share/doc/systemd-services
/usr/share/doc/systemd-services/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/systemd-services/copyright
/var/lib/dpkg/info/systemd-services.conffiles
/var/lib/dpkg/info/systemd-services.list
/var/lib/dpkg/info/systemd-services.md5sums
/var/lib/dpkg/info/systemd-services.postinst
/var/lib/dpkg/info/systemd-services.postrm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/systemd-services.preinst
/var/lib/dpkg/info/systemd-services.prerm
/ #
Can I use a copy of /bin/systemctl from the up-to-date Ubuntu I have on the same disk?

Thanks
