Question linux mint 6/ubuntu 8.04 audio problem

My system (dell dimension e520) has a separate Hoontech sound card which until recently (that is up to -I think- ubuntu 8.04) worked without a hitch.

Problem : At start up, mplayer returns a message along the lines that another audio player is active and no sound is reproduced, but
vlc does not have a problem and plays a/v happily.

My fix : use System Monitor and kill the pulse audio process at each log-in.

Has anyone else had this problem and is there a more lasting solution?

pulse audio manager

I use a BOSE usb system, and my MB onboard chipset is also found. on board modems also can be seen as sound cards by pulse audio.

My fix was to set the BOSE USB as the default card in Pulse Audio Manager, which I could get to through the GUI after allowing the icon from the admin menu.
