I know this thread is old, sort of solved the problem and forgot about it! Came back to post another question and found this.
There WAS NO SOLUTION to getting Mint 10 to run. I went back to Mint 9 and everything installed just fine.

I just installed Mint 11 and it seems to work just fine! Whatever the problem was in 10 seems to have been fixed. Probably a driver.
Might go back to 9 though -- 11 seems to boot a lot slower. Will play with it a bit and see.

Does anyone have any new information about the "special device /dev/xxx does not exist" error?
I have gotten this while trying to install 2 different distros lately.
