google earth,deb package removal

Haven't been around in a while, is good to be back. I am trying to install Google earth on Mint 17.3 KDE, it starts then quits? Have tried 3 o4 different methods and still no go. My question is 1) What happens to all the packages I installed that don't work and how, or do I need to clean them up or remove them? Especially .deb packages? Also has anyone gotten google earth to work on mint 17.3 KDE? Thank you in advance for your time and help

Hi...

Can you describe the methods you have tried and post any relevant terminal outputs? You should be able to remove any .deb packages using Synaptic. Also, are you running a 32 or 64 bit version of Mint 17.3?

Regards...

Roughly, as I'm typing without a system in front of me(debian at least), you either install a google-earth-install type package and it pulls a slightly older version abd installs it fine. Or you try to install the 32 bit .deb version and spend a lot of time installing dependencies manually. Or you try to install the 64 bit .deb version and modify a few packages.

more info

Ok thanks for the quick replies, I am running Mint 17.3 64 bit, KDE, up to date. I have tried installing it from synaptic, I have downloadedd the latest version from Google Earth website (64 bit version for debian/ubuntu), I have tried to install the 32 bit version with some extra packages. What happens is Google Earth starts to load but never makes it to the desktop, then the icon disappears from the task bar and nothing. Hope this helps, also when I try to remove the deb package using either apt-get or aptitude it says it isn't installed?

This should work. 3 commands
Code:
sudo apt install -y msttcorefonts
Code:
cd /tmp; wget -O google-earth.sh http://drive.noobslab.com/data/apps/google-earth/google-earth.sh
Code:
chmod +x google-earth.sh; sudo ./google-earth.sh
Good luck!!!

My guess at this point is that you might have forgotten to install one or more dependencies and/or the wrong architecture. If you would, please open a terminal and attempt to start Google Earth using the command...

Code:
google-earth
As a side note, you can see my experiment with installing the "googleearth-package" here.

If you find the executable (usually called googleearth-bin, on my system I run "ldd /usr/lib/googleearth/googleearth-bin") then it will let you know which libraries are missing and you can then find them at Debian package search.

Very odd, so it's not a missing library then. What does the following look like:
Code:
glxinfo|grep render
I take it this is just a normal desktop or laptop not through VNC or anything like that?

Hi...

You're welcome, although I'm not sure why it requires those settings to work. Something still doesn't sound right here.

I'm glad you got it working but I take it that you can use it without being in safe mode? Otherwise it's only half-fixed?
Had I thought about it just deleting the .googleearth hidden directory in your home might have done the trick...
I have also had Google Earth just crash on between 1 in 4 and 19 in 20 occasions, depending upon the particular version, for no apparent reason.

I guess it is because of my graphics card. If I don't use safe mode then the street view is all distorted and you can't make anything out, compressed doesn't seem to make a difference either way. Obviously I'm not that good to know just why but I think that is the reason. Also when I finally got it installed all of my bookmarks and places are still there? Thanks again to everyone.
