Hi all. I am a bit baffled by this situation. My laptop is pretty much on 24/7 and very regularly, my sound just stops working. It works fine after a restart but I have no idea why it just randomly stops working all of a sudden. Is there a command line command I can type in to try to restart the sound without having to reboot?
I don't mind rebooting but I'd really like to avoid it if I'm in the middle of something and don't want to start all over again and I'd like to figure out why it's doing that too.
On that note, how would I go about updating the driver manually?
Have you checked the log files to see if they provide some hint as to why this is happening?
You can narrow a journalctl search by time. If you can approximate the time of the failure, that might make the search easier. This link explains how to do that; scroll about a quarter of the way down.

^ Is that EVERYTHING the journal provides for the timeframe of the audio cutting out?
This seems awfully narrow, couldn't you add at least a second on either side?
Always provide the command that produced the output!
And use CODE tags for that, see my signature.
Ok. Let's try this again. After my original post and after reading the log, I saw messages about updating my BIOS so I did that last evening. Not sure how to update other drives that are normally done in Windows but I'll deal with that another day. The BIOS updated fine though.
The code I used to generate the output was "journalctl --since yesterday" I had to delete a bunch of lines because of the character count limitation so if more is needed, I can add more time before and after the event in another post.
Thanks.

So the audio cut out "Feb 06 15:36"?
You said "Sound randomly stops working" - we need logs from that moment, and shortly before that.
Seems relevant messages might contain the keywords "snd_hda_intel", "hdaudio", or just "audio".
I just booted up twice and here is the log file from the first attempt. I didn't include the second log because it says the same thing. Here is what was captured:

my sound just stops working. It works fine after a restart but I have no idea why it just randomly stops working all of a sudden.
Your description suggests that there's a moment (during a normal user session presumably) when your sound "just stops working".
I asked you for logs from the time that happens. Not after a reboot or anything.
If that time is covered in the output you already provided, please point it out.
Additionally, can you somehow trigger the problematic behaviour? How? Did you do some general initial troubleshooting (see my signature)?
We are willing to help you, definitely, but it won't work if you just dump some log file and expect us to do all the work. It's not possible, because you're the only one who can provide us with relevant information.
I know it's daunting, you're a newbie and unfamiliar with Linux command line system maintenance etc., but that's where we're at nevertheless.
And just a friendly reminder: we're not some magically free Linux customer service. It's a community effort, just like most things in the wonderful world of FLOSS.
Of course there's the remote chance that somebody has your exact same problem, or just plain guesses the correct solution. But don't you think they'd have come forward by now?

I'm doing my best to find the information. I'm not just sitting here with my thumb up my ass. On a number of occasions, I will walk away from the computer and when I come back, the sound has stopped working. I will try to find the logs but I don't know the exact times. I posted the logs from the boot-ups because they contained the same error messages I've found elsewhere in the log files and it is what I posted below.

I have not seen any common thing that I'm doing that would trigger it. Sometimes it boots with no sound. Other times, it's working fine and I walk away to do something and when I come back, it doesn't work.

I'm not expecting anyone to do all the work. I'm trying to learn as I go as well as ask people who know so if you think I'm just sitting here with my thumb in my ass and not trying to figure this out, you are dead wrong. I don't know what I don't know and that's why I'm here. If that is problematic, I will go elsewhere. I'm am trying really hard to gather the correct information and that's all I can do.

Is this what you think I think this forum is? Just some customer service? I am asking ONE question and trying learn how my system works (or doesn't work, as the case may be) and learn this stuff so that one day perhaps I can pay it back by helping someone in the future who is a newbie and I happen to know the solution based upon my experiences.

I guess that's your way of saying that my problem must just be a figment of my imagination since no one has come forward with a solution. Again, if my question and desire to learn from the people here who know worlds more than I do about Linux is problematic, then I'll go elsewhere. In the meantime, I'm going to continue trying to learn about how the innards of Linux work and what is causing this anomaly in my system.
Have you queried dmesg yet? Google search dmesg sound to get a idea.
Thanks for the awesome suggestion! I found some great information on that command and am trying to gather pertinent information by playing with the various delimiters concerning my audio failures.
