I played around a bit with Testdisk photorec.
I don't know exactly what I did, but suddenly my home folder reappeared!
I think it may have been to do with the fact that I had the home folder on a separate partition, so the Proteus installation didn't wipe it after all.
I certainly learned my lesson!
