I know, I felt the same way when it first happened. :-)
The annoying thing is, however, that I changed one of the options in KeePass2 (I unchecked Interface->Force using system font) and got a 1/10 strike rate after that. I then changed it back to what it had been before and haven't been able to get the Chinese characters since!
I must say however that sometimes Firefox just downright refuses to drop text onto that username box altogether, in which case I have to restart Firefox. I've also had a situation several times where, after using KeePass2, I'm unable to click in Firefox at all. I've never experienced that before, and it may be particular to my using a VM, but it doesn't make me feel entirely comfortable about the KeePass2/Firefox combination.
I've not experienced anything with not being able to click into Firefox.
I looked at my KeePass2 after your comment about "force using system font". On my version it says it's "for Unix only".

KeePass tries to detect the system font (in UISystemFonts.UnixLoadFonts); I could imagine that this detection somehow fails. An easy way to see whether the issue is caused by this is to disable the option "Force using system fonts (Unix only)" in the options ('Interface' tab) and restarting KeePass.

Yup, that's the one. I have now managed to get Chinese characters since then, but very irregularly, so it's most probably a red herring to be honest.
The transformation into Chinese characters seems random, but almost nothing related to computers is really random; there's usually some underlying (but often very hidden) factor(s) to blame.
So, what factor(s) lead to the Chinese characters? It could be some background process or system state, but I'm leaning towards it being in some way related to the way in which we're dragging and dropping the text, more specifically something to do with the moment the cursor enters the input box. I've noticed that the cursor changes to a drop icon before I've even placed the cursor over the input box, which it shouldn't really do, and am thinking that perhaps the Chinese characters may appear if the cursor is crossing over into the input box at the same time as the cursor changes to the drop icon.
As you can see, I'm now definitely grasping at straws. ;-)
I did try unchecking “force using system font”, save & restart KeePass2.
Unfortunately no success. In just the first four attempts Chinese was pasted twice.
While I appreciate the efforts from everyone here, especially hydrurga and beachboy2, I think it might be better to give KeePassX a go.
Although I can’t see how to customise the view to get it the same as KeePass2, I’ve just posted in the KeePass help forum asking if it is possible.
I do like beachboy2’s hardware solution with the use of a hammer, with the emphasis on hard. Must have been a bit of a blow - definitely a “camera obscura” after that treatment.
Thanks again for all the support I’ve received on this topic, now running into five pages.
You much prefer the layout and ease of use of KeePass2 compared to KeePassX and so do I.
Until somebody comes up with a Firefox solution, is it not much simpler to use QupZilla or Chromium instead?
Perhaps, perhaps. I'm not paranoid or anti-google, but I wouldn't be too sure about any data Google might be harvesting about my browsing habits with Chromium.
I take it Chromium is Chrome for Linux, or am I mistaken? (I thought I was once, but it was an error)
So maybe Qupzilla is the answer, if I can't customise my KeePassX layout to mirror KeePass2.
If I were you, I would use QupZilla and DDG with KeePass2.
Thanks,
I've been using DDG already for two or three years, for that specific reason.
In this case was referring to the Chrome browser itself maybe doing some surreptitious tracking of it's own, as it's a Google product.
I see in the link you kindly provided, it says: “Chromium rebranded with very few additions such as usage tracking”. I'm guessing it must do some tracking then?
I'll see what comes back from KeePassX about customising it. depending on that, it could be KeePassX with Firefox, or KeePass2 with Qupzilla.
I feel it may well be the latter, as you've suggested.
I've had no reply from KeePassX whether it's possible to customise the view to be the same as KeePass2, so I'll have to assume it's not.
That means I now have to decide if to go for Qupzilla & KeePass2.
I think I'd better start a new thread asking about using Qupzilla.
Thanks everyone for all the replies to my seemingly endless ongoing questions.
Should I mark this thread as "solved", even though technically it's not? Maybe the mods would like to effectively see it as closed though?

Nope, I wouldn't mark it as solved until it actually is.
Can you indulge me in two tests?
First, can you drag from Keepass2 to the Gmail username input window in Firefox, but don't actually enter the box for, say, 3 seconds (i.e. drag, but momentarily stop outside for 3 seconds before entering). Then drop. See if it improves things.
Secondly, drag in any way you want, but then wait 3 seconds within the input box before actually dropping.
There's a third one as well, but that can wait for the results of the first two.

Hydrurga,
I can’t believe you’re persisting with this! I am however, extremely pleased you’re keen to carry on, thanks a lot.
I had to remove KeePassX and re-install KeePass2.
I used gmail for all these tests. I counted five seconds for everything, to be sure. If there was some particular reason I’m not aware of, I’d be only too pleased to do it all again for three seconds, given your dedication to this!
This is in chronological order:
Hover outside login field five seconds (hovered immediately above it), then drop in: Successful ten out of ten times.
My own follow-up, immediately after that: No pause: failed first time out of ten, remaining nine times passed.
My own follow-up again: Different email address, no pause: Passed ten out of ten times.
Hover inside login field five seconds:
Failed first and tenth time – attempts two to eight passed.
My own follow-up again: Different email address, no pause: Passed ten out of ten times.
It’s crazy that it sometimes passed the test 100%, with no pause/hover anywhere. I’m guessing that might be just the way it sometimes is.
Do these results tell you anything? Any more suggestions?
