Cannot d/l two items from synaptic manager.

Hi.
I just tried to download two things from the synaptic manager but i got the following message:

W:Can't drop privileges for download as file'/root/.synaptic/tmp//tmp_sh' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'.-pkgAcquire::Run[13:Permission denied]

I saw the word root i there so tried to open the root folder but was denied. Shouldn't the user be able to open any folder they wish?
Yesterday i could download things from the synaptic manager, i hope those two items will be the only ones giving trouble.

This has been reported as a bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...e/+bug/1543280 (with workarounds suggested).

Also, according to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugr...cgi?bug=813786 it is resolved by the latest version of apt.

Can you please run:

apt update

and

apt upgrade

and post the output here.

If these don't work due to the problem then we'll try the workarounds first.
