I've setup a samba share to allow anonymous access (I think), but when I browse to the folder Nemo gives me an error dialog:
Unknown file type
The file "smb://server/share/" has no known programs associated with it. Use the Open With dialog to pick a program to open it with.
I tried to access the share with smbclient, and everything is fine, I can write to it without entering any password, so I don't think there's a problem on the server end.
Depending on what SMB/CIFS versions your server supports you might also have to set the client protocol via the /etc/samba/smb.conf file (in the global section).
client min protocol = CORE
client max protocol = SMB3
I already had those packages and indeed, I'd be really surprised if a user-friendly distro like Mint was unable to browse windows shares out of the box due to lacking client packages.
I also tried those changes to smb.conf but that had no effect.
However I noticed I actually have two icons for my samba share:
server (File Sharing), server (File Sharing), and when I click on the second it works, but not the first one! I wondered if it may be avahi-server giving me the two icons, so I uninstalled it from the server, then it shows only a single icon in Nemo (no File Sharing after it), but I can't access it any more from Nemo.
I also have two icons for my Synology NAS, and realised I have done for some time now:
NAS (File Sharing), NAS (File Sharing)
However I can access both of those from Nemo and always have been able to, they seem interchangeable.
So I have a work-around for now: ensure avahi running and click on the second icon.
Once I figured out how to enable that box, that works very well. And once I had enabled the same url box and visited my NAS it became clear I was actually using AFP, and not SMB as I had assumed all along. I guess I had enabled both on the NAS without thinking about it.
I don't really understand why that works and browsing the icons does not, but having gone that route, the icons then magically start giving me access.
