Cannot connect to internet on new mint 10 installation (newbie)
Hi, I am a total newbie. After a couple of frustrating weeks I finally got a distro - mint 10 - up and running on a live USB on my Acer Aspire 5741 laptop, thanks to many good folks here at LQ. It looks great. Unfortunately I can't get started because it won't connect to the net (I'm typing this on another machine). It seems like the Broadcom wireless manager needs a driver downloaded. However, when I plug in the ethernet, the network manager recognises it as AutoEtho0 and attempts to connect - but fails. Windows 7 connects no problem.
I have searched the forums and online but haven't been able to find an exact response to this problem. All help much appreciated.
Thanks, but it's not just wireless - it won't connect on an ethernet connection either. I haven't really had much time to work on it. Frustrating 'cause I really like the interface was looking forward to getting to grips with it
Have you tried the running live-cd to see if it connects to internet?
If it does then you can use dmesg to see what driver it's using.
Another thing you can possibly mount and use it's internet connection to get what you need.
Once you have the liveCD environment running, open up a terminal and type:
Code:
lspci
it will show everything that mint recognizes on the PCI bus; including onboard hardware. does your ethernet/wireless adapters show in that output? go ahead and post the output, just to help
