My wife's old 32bit laptop runs Mint and has done for some time.
I recently updated it and found that I could no longer log in automatically.
A "Theme" screen appears with a request to choose a user (there is only one) and enter the password.
I couldn't get rid of it, auto login was enabled but I was unable to get the thing to cooperate.
I downloaded the latest 32bit iso, backed up her home folder and did a clean install (enabling auto login). Everything worked fine and I reinstalled the home files and rebooted without a problem. On the next boot up the same condition as with the previous installation reappeared. The system works but the business of manually logging in is annoying.
Has anyone else experienced a similar situation?
All input gratefully acknowledged.
what login manager is being screwy? you should be able to install a different on and remove that one after you've tried its auto login to see and be sure that one works. that to me would be the fasted solution.
Thank you BW-userx,
I'll have a fight to get the laptop back from the boss right now, she's busy with it.
I imagine that the problem stems from the new lightdm manager, I'm guessing that the distro I updated had MDM. I can download MDM but I'm not sure of how to proceed from that. When I get hold of the laptop again I'll have a go.
Thank you again for your input.
Not a runner that suggestion, BW-userx.
We live on a hill farm with chickens (and eggs) everywhere and it's a 20 mile round trip to the nearest shop.
The problem has sort of gone away, as I said in my original post, the system works well, I was just irritated that it didn't login as I set it up to do. My wife doesn't care if it takes a few seconds longer to get in.
I'll probably leave it, I don't go looking for trouble.
Many thanks for your interest, one day perhaps I'll be able to help people on LinuxQuestions rather than asking questions.
