Arduino, Java, and Linux Mint 19.1 -- missing something?

Can arduino ide run on Linux Mint 19.1 installing with synaptic/apt & no compiling, etc.? How?

Synaptic for Linux Mint offers arduino 2:1.0.5+dfsg2-4.1 and openjdk-lts (11.0.3+7-1ubuntu2~18.04.1)

That configuration does not allow selecting the com port in ide which displays following error:
java.lang.NullPointerException thrown while loading gnu.io.RXTXCommDriver

Search shows "rxtx" problem since openjdk jre version moved past 8.

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugr...cgi?bug=896929 shows a fix patch in rxtx since 2018.

This works:
sudo apt-get remove default-jre
sudo apt-get remove default-jre-headless
sudo apt-get remove openjdk-11-jre
sudo apt-get remove openjdk-11-jre-headless

but unsafe for 3 versions old?
