Hi,
I have bought a HP laptop with Window Vista Premium Home installed. I want to format Window Vista and install Linux and Window XP. What are the impacts of this on system drivers? Do all the drivers work fine with new installation ?

Which model of Hp laptop?
There's a good chance you'll have to chase around the internet for drivers for XP, Linux also but not as many. Chances are better for Linux if the hardware is of a newer design. I would get the full scoop on exactly what hardware is included and chase down the XP drivers first.
It sounds like you want to eliminate Vista. Use Vista's disk management utility from within Vista to shrink it's partition to allow free space for Linux. Set the bios to boot from the optical drive first and pop in the XP installation disk and boot to it. When it asks where to install it, select the partition Vista is in. After XP is installed, pop in the Linux installation disk and select the free space to install it into, make sure to put the boot loader in the MBR of the disk which should be /dev/sda if you only have one SATA hard drive.
Hopefully you have a Vista installation disk also incase you want/need to go back.

I would think the hardware is pretty much the same as the ones in the thread link below, I've been running around HP's site looking for hardware specs on that unit, haven't found them yet. HP has been saying they've been improving their on-line support section for the past couple years, personally, I think it was much easier to find the information your looking for a couple years ago. I fail to see the improvement. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=575002
hi,
You can go for xp and linux in hp laptop, better go for RHEL v.4, Dont install linux in extended partition of xp,Go for linux in separte unpartioned space.
HP has given the Laptop with two partition C(100 GB) and D(20GB) drive . Now for installing Linux, I think I need to format Vista or is there any way through which I can fragment without formatting the Vista and install Linux. I am new to dual bootup.
Will anybody plz can help me in making my laptop work with both linux and Vista? Please write down step by step procedure so that i do not make any mistake, as I do not have Vista installation CD :-(.
hi,
Please say which drive contains your vista system files if C drive contains your windows vista files then go for linux in D-drive.While the installtion of linux dont go for automatical disk partition, as it may delete your Windows files, go for disk druid manually.Select the partitions carefully.
If you still have any doubt you can mail me.
If you are good in linux installation then go for it or else better do keep your important files back up and go for linux installtion.
