Her (my wife) Dell E4310. Being a bit older. Should roll with AntiX 4.0.5 kernel just fine. After I inherit it.
I inherited it since my last post: Found it had a iffy edition of Windows 7 Enterprise Proffesional on it.
In case she wants it back. I pulled the Windows drive and slapped a 60 gig SSD that is pretty fast.
The Asus Flip I bought for her has been updated from Windows 8 to Windows 10.
Tricky Dicky on how Windows 10 has built in with what ever you wanna call it.
"Your recovery partition is not compatible with Windows 10 upgrade"
So it destroys it. But the wife is a die hard windows user so who am I to say?
Anyways,

I know this is old but I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad T420 about a week ago. It came with Windows 7, 4gb ram, 250gb HDD, & dvd-rw (I know they're about outdated).
I'm very pleased with how it's running but it has been beaten up worser then I would have liked. But I got it at a very good price.
Congrats on the laptop there. Physical appearance never pulled no weight with me. If it functions as a
rat bike/rat laptop. Function is all that matters. Here is hoping you got a steal on the price.
Edit: This last week I found a used System 76 "Lemur" for $180 bucks for a user on this site that was asking. I grinned when they turned it down because of personal preferences.

I have Debian Testing & Mageia 5 installed on it, but may replace Mageia with something else.
Thanks for the replies.
As long as you're happy with it, then it's a good buy.
I bought from Newegg and it was advertised as a T400 for $150, after I decided to purchase it, I was told it has T420 specs. I contacted Newegg and they told me whatever the specs are listed is what I will receive. After that they took the ad down. So far I'm satisfied with it. The last Thinkpad I bought, used, was an TP-380XD. I got it around 2003. I put Debian on it and used it for a while but it was too slow for every day use. I left it at my house after moving last year. I wish I had kept it now, as a collector's item!
personally DELL sucks, HP I like becuse I got one and it works great with Linux.
HP elightbook 6930p
picked it up at a pawn shop for 80$ -- that's where to shop first for laptops, they're cheeper there, and linux will run on most everything, even your cat.
I've ran Debian, slackware, and a few others just to give them a look see, now currently VOID Linux on this laptop, and have had no problems with any of them.

Nothing wrong with Dell or HP. Between the 2 companies I've owned (including at work) 40-50 laptops. They all worked quite well, and if you do a LITTLE homework, they work WONDERFULLY with Linux (this usually means staying away from their consumer-oriented lines). For quite a while, the Dells were designed a little more stylish compared to a more plain-jane looking HP, but most of the hardware they use is near-identical, their prices are extremely competitive with each other, and they both are quite reliable.

I've had my dealings with DELL it is a personal option, I use to build my own desktops, my first laptop $5000.00 all the bells and whistles, (the base to plug it into a monitor too, and maxed ram, HDD and everythign else I could put on it laptop, thats why 5000.00, but I wasn't about to pay $200.00 for a carry case) DELL laptop.
I maxed it out because I know its a Bit*h to upgrade a laptop (back then anyways) and it was so flimsy it stopped working before the warrenty did. the only thing that DELL laptop did for me was open up the door for me in using laptops. because I ended up networking my appartment (before wifi) cat5 and jacks in the walls so I could take it in anyroom with me. rather then being stuck in my room with the TV and sound system in the livingroom.
then I had a netbook DELL it worked but I could not jack it around and install again and again and again different linux distro's, to just check them out. it started frezzing up on me and the screen lines at boot up.
then I got this used HP laptop and I don't install so many different linux's distro on it, I've gotten past that trial and error in seeing what's out there that I'd like to use distro.
but I am not saying DON't get a DELL I'm just saying DELL suck in my option.
Loved the E5500's. Had 2 of them things, my wife had 1. Hers technically still working, although long since passed on to someone else in her family. No frills workhorses of a laptop.
yes there is, they don't really think, that is a lie. hehehe
It's called marketing my friend, nowadays it's not lying anymore.
Another thumb down for Dell, as attested from other people's troubles with their computers.
I guess this would be a bad time to say that I will only buy Latitudes going into the future because their Linux compatibility is great, they're upgradable, and now made of all metal.
I haven't had alot of experience with laptops but I agree with someone mention, get the business line model instead of the consumer line! I've had good success with desktop biz line overall.
The Thinkpad is still running great for me. I'm loving it. I may look for another model also.
