using GRUB 1.5 with boot on sata-drive and system on usb drive(ipod photo)

Hey..

I have a Amilo Pi1505 laptop and a Ipod Photo, so i wanted to have Windows XP running on my laptop's sata-drive, and Mandriva on the Ipod, but is this possible ?

I tried to install Mandrive on the ipod and set the 'bootdrive' to the sata-drive on my laptop where win XP is, but now i just get the error 21 every time the computer starts.

Is using the installation cd for XP, and running recovery the fastest way to get my win XP system back and running ?

No reason it shouldn't work. I prefer to have a (Linux) boot partition on the internal disk, and use that to boot both.
If you want, you can also use the Windoze loader - involves installing grub to a partition rather than the MBR, and copying the boot sector record across and add an entry to boot.ini. Works for XP, Vista is a bit different.
Do some searching - plenty of how-to's out there.

As for your last query, yes - go to Recovery Console, and run fixmbr
