Switching to VGA video during Boot

I have a Dell D500 with the Keyboard and LCD removed. My application requires an external monitor. I'm looking for command(s) that can be issued during boot (possibly in a grub configuration) that will switch the laptop from LCD to CRT mode. I can boot fine with the LCD and keyboard and use the Fn F8 keyboard combo during boot and this works fine. I have noticed that if I attempt to switch the video mode using the keyboard sequence after X is started, the video image is corrupt. If someone has a solution please be specific as I'm very new to Linux.
