I get to the wireless, it just keeps SHIFTINg to other access points
Sorry, I guess I didn't make myself clear. I'm an old hand at configuring networks. What's throwing me is that I'll be up and running, cruising the web and BLAM! lose my access. So when I look at ifconfig, route, and iwconfig, I see that I don't have any connection. Sometimes if I try to do a "ifup eth1" it'll claim that it can't find an interface....So I just rebuilt this with a minimal setup, dropped Ifplugd after reading that it will "automatically" reconfigure the ethernet card...Umm maybe.
I haven' rebooted this version, so I don't know yet. Another thing is that I have Suseplugger running in a window, What's up with that?
I'm in an area that must have, humm, 7 wireless APs and have aren't encrypted. I'm tempted to find the owners and school them. Anyway, all those APs are stepping all over themselves and I think that's what the issue is.
It's something in the 9.3 version as I NEVER had this problem in 9.2.
Oh yeah... The one other thing I forgot to mention is to try removing any other network cards under YaST. that way, it's got to go through your wireless, and the info that kinternet gives to you will then be useful. (DNS and all that.)
one more thing:
maybe I already mentioned it, and if I've hit senility already then please drag me into a corner and shoot me, but try specifying your AP's MAC address in yast.
if you've got problems with staying hooked into one AP, I think that should help.
I beleive the source of my woes was the new Belkin 802.11Pre-N router. Apparently the router was having fits assigning an ip to the wificard via linux. The linux support simply seems to not be built into the router.
I booted into suse at a coffee shop, and wham, the connections were up ( not just up, flying packet rates! )
the router @ the coffee shop was a simple d-link wireless g model. As i understand the Pre-N standard in its current state has linux absent from its compatability. I may be able to do the tweaking to get the compatability to work, but just....the Belkin Pre-N is definately the source of the home wifi issue.
I will update with tweaks or sources regaurding the issue. If anyone knows of a good router compatability list, please post it within this thread. Thanks guys! I'm just glad to find that I hadn't oopsed somthing in the netconf!
Ok, I'm a really stupid linux user...know nothing...
Suse 9.3 Dell Inspiron XPS
I'm having a problem with my wireless in that DNS seems to keep dropping and I have to reconnect to the wireless via the Wireless LAN Dialog.
Behavior is like this:
1. Type in a website to browse
2. Get a message from browser that that domain name cannot be found
3. Reconnect through Wireless LAN Dialog
4. Retype in website in browser
5. I can connect
I can then connect to that site continuously. But, if I go to a new website I have to repeat the above steps. Does the DNS endpoint get cached someplace or something? I do switch wireless networks a few times per day (different locations).
