Slackware 12 sound issues

I dunno what laptop you have but the kernel that comes with slackware 12 have an issue with IBM thinkpads. You'll need a patch for this issue, check the slackwarewiki for details.

Or, you simply need to run alsamixer and switch the sound on.

Assuming your card is properly detected, the most likely problem you have is the alsamixer isn't set properly. This is easily corrected.
1) After you log in, type "alsamixer" (without quotes). If your sound card has been detected and set up, you should come to an ANSI style console screen. If your sound card wasn't detected, you will receive an error.
2) Using your arrow keys, make sure all levels are cranked up fully.
3) Hit ESC to exit alsamixer
4) Enter "alsactl store" (without quotes).
5) Start X-windows and use the mixer applet for whichever desktop you are utilizing to crank up the volume.

Hope that helps.

Blessed be!
Pappy
