Scribus/desktop publishing on linux linpus lite?

Hello all,

After getting this machine I've become very disappointed to learn that I can't run serif pageplus on linux, and am now in desperate need of a new free desktop publishing software, I've heard Scribus is the best option for linux but I've tried downloading it to no avail...

Can someone PLEASE give me an idiotproof guide to installing scribus, or if this isn't possible, a suggestion for an alternative?

Scribus fits the bill.

But first: What machine are you disappointed with? I ask because depending on the use you want to make of it, switching to another GNU/Linux distribution might help a lot because you'll surely have less problems when you're using a consistent repository.

That said, from what I read, Linpus Lite is based on Fedora 8. But frankly, I have no idea if it's fully compatible or not, and in order to use a Fedora package, it'd have to be. The moment you're sure about that, installing a certain piece of software (i.e. giving you your recipe) is a piece of cake (provided the standard tools are there - again, from what I read, they should be).

But as I said, I'd consider switching - Linpus Lite has a nice interface, but that's about it for achievements. Your netbook will run almost every modern distribution (I run Ubuntu on a Asus Eee 701), maybe with a bit of tweaking, but after that, you've got a full software repository at hand, and Scribus (and most probably whatever else you'd like to choose) will be right there. Additionally, the level of support you can get on this board will go right up, too.

To find out which distribution may be right for you, there's a nice first-time helper: http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/

Of course, this board's full of threads about this. You'll not get a definite answer, you'll have to decide for yourself depending on your needs.

M.
