Problems with ATMEL wireless pcmcia drivers on Gigafast WF721-AEX
Well, I bought one of these cheapie Gigafast 802.11b cards over the net, and I've been tearing my hair out trying to get it to work under redhat 9. I've tried both the drivers which came with the card and the drivers from sourceforge. The drivers that came with the card give me errors:
fvnetrE_cs.o: The module you are trying to load (fvnetrE_cs.o) is compiled with a gcc
version 2 compiler, while the kernel you are running is compiled with
a gcc version 3 compiler. This is known to not work.
cardctl ident gives me:
product info: "OEM", "11Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card V-5"
manfid: 0x0000, 0x0000
function: 6 (network)
so I tried to get the atmel drivers off sourceforge to work next, and I changed the link in /etc/pcmcia/config for my card to
card "OEM 11Mbps WLAN PCMCIA Card-E"
version "OEM", "11Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card V-5"
bind "pcmf502re" (sourceforge driver)
instead of
bind "fvnetrE_cs" (driver which came with card)
but when insmod tries to load pcmf502re I get
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol __netdev_watchdog_up
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol eth_type_trans
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol __kfree_skb
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol alloc_skb
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol ether_setup
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol register_pccard_driver
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol unregister_netdev
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol register_netdev
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol netif_rx
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol skb_over_panic
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/pcmf502re: unresolved symbol softnet_data
On some other modules I've gotten the same error about the different gcc versions also, since there was no source I had no choice, it's not pretty but have you tried to force the fvnet module? eg: insmod -f fvnetrE_cs. Of course, you'll want to make sure the pcmf502re module is removed prior to this by doing an rmmod pcmf502re.
okay, maybe this is where my linux inexperience comes into play.. The readme with the linux drivers that came with my card say that once I run the makefile that I should be able to do an ifconfig and be able to see my wireless card post make. Now when I manually force the driver to load, and I do this ifconfig command, I get only the localhost entry showing up (or my ppp or eth0 depending on whether they're connected).. so how do I tell if this is loaded, or basically how do I link my connection through the card if it's (the fvnetrE_cs driver) loaded?
if the card does not have a valid ip address, you'll need a "ifconfig -a" to see it. Also, after the addition of any new drivers to any tree under the /lib/modules directory, a "depmod -a" is always a good idea. This updates the dependencies info for all modules, eg: what other modules a given module might need in order to function. An "lsmod" will list all currently loaded modules, somewhere in the listing your fvnetrE_cs should turn up.
