New NVIDIA driver and framebuffer

Hi,

I would like to know if there is any possible way of getting framebuffer to work when using the latest NVIDIA driver? Durring the installation of the driver some kind of a warning message pops up saying that the driver conflicts with framebuffer and may not be working properly if framebuffer is enabled ... It would be nice to have both, new NVIDIA driver and framebuffer working ... any ideas how to do it?

Hi lp449

Make sure to read the README.txt file that is included with the nvidia driver package. Also, if you can post more details here maybe someone can help you.

You want to put:

Computer specs, including the display card model

The distribution you're using (& the kernel version)

The contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or /etc/X11/XF86Config depending on your distribution)

The error message that you received during installation

I don't think that detailet computer specifications would be absolutely essential. I just would like to know if there is any possible way of getting trough the conflict between NVIDIA driver and rivafb in kernel.

The conflict exists because the rivafb developpers doesn't know enough about the inner workings of the nvidia module to keep them coexisting. I don't even know if they'd want to considering that the Nvidia driver is closed source. The Nvidia developpers could in theory make the nvidia module coexist with the rivafb module, but since they don't have a lot of control over the rivafb development they probably feel that their efforts could be better spent elsewhere then trying to keep up with any changes to the rivafb module. They also believe that it's unsafe to have two moduless fiddling with the same graphics card at the same time.
