Trying the "mount /dev/sda1 -o ro /mnt" command, I get:
mount: mounting /dev/sda1 on /mnt failed: No such file or directory

While typing "ls /mnt" gives me:
ls: /mnt: No such file or directory

It seems like we are at a dead end there...

Go into your bios and tell it to load default settings.

Do you have any other bootable cd's?

Do you know what key you need to press at boot time to select boot?
