Installation of SUSE 9.1 on my Inspiron 5160 goes great until it tries to start up KDE 3.3. During the "initializing peripherals" the KDE splash screen disappears and all that is left is the welcome screen and the mouse pointer and it hangs there. I've tried rebooting with "apic" and "noapic" in the boot options, but it doens't help. I've reinstalled with GNOME and it works. I've installed Mandrake 10.1 with KDE 3.2 and it works.
No other devices are plugged in at all! Doesn't matter whether I log in as root or user. The ironic thing about this is that I have been using all kinds of Linux distros for about 3 years. Never paid a penny for them. I'd always download the iso for free and install. This time I sunk some money into SUSE 9.2. I guess I'm out the money because it's just not working. That's what I get for supporting Linux.
You paid for it? After 3 years of free distro's your probably used to fixing things yourself, but if you paid for it you might be able to get some decent installation support from SuSE. Worth a try?
I know this an old question. But it is still haunting the KDE world I believe.
Today I got tired of windows and my Linux Virtual Machines, and decided to install Linux Mint as the second booting OS.
I download a Linux Mint KDE 64 bit (Serena) from their official website.
I Used YUMI to create a bootable installer.
After an hour of fighting with Windows 10 UEFI I managed to boot the USB.
It boots yey! After the bunch of text and I was greeted by KDE Desktop Environment.
And that is it. you can hover the mouse. You can see the desktop wallpaper. That is all.
NO TASK BAR NO KDE MENU NO NOTIFICATION AREA NOTHING! NOTHING!
No keyboard key works except prt scr and machine's powerbutton.
ISSUE: "I cannot see anything aside from the wallpaper and the pointer. + I cannot do anything."
(Except push the power button and the menu to restart shutdown pops-up, and when Print scrren Button is pressed the dialog on what to do with the images pops-up)
I thought it was just my usb drive coz its old and slow.
I left KDE to read from my usb for like about an hour. (Still nothing but the wallpaper and pointer)
And so I decided to do the following:
1. Used 2 newer flash Drives.
2. Re-downloaded a fresh copy of Linux Mint KDE with md5 hashes matched (weird is even my old copy has its md5 hashes matched, but for the love of my stupid science I still downloaded a new copy)
3. Used "linux dd command" (on 512k buffer), Rufus, UNETbootin, and again YUMI , all latest versions on date of post, to create the bootable USB installer.
And guess what same issue. I am stuck on looking at KDE Desktop wallpaper and the mouse pointer. For 2 hours this time!
For the love of science I left it over night and morning came and still nothing.
Out of Insanity I tried to play with the screenshot Image!!!
I tried to export the image to firefox nothing happens. But when I tried to do a Copt to Clipboard and Save and Exit. BOOOOM!!!
Taskbar, KDE's start Menu and all suddenly went popping up! And gave me a KDE Desktop I needed to Try KDE and Install it.
What a dumb way to get around it. After seeing everything is working... All that came to my mind is:
