Installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, but still not able to play or listen to anything, mp3s, mp4s, WAVs, YouTube, etc

Running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 "Jauty". (Impossible to upgrade, please do not mention)

This device has never let me play or listen to any format, mp4, mp3, WAVs, OGGs, YouTube, etc

Recently tried installing ubuntu-restricted-extras to resolve this, but it has not worked. Uninstalled and reinstalled the OS plenty of times and it has never fixed it.

Clueless as to what could be the issue. Would just like to listen to some tunes. Please assist. Thanks!

Hello, there!

Can you do me a favor, and run the "lspci" command? Post the results of said command, so that we know what hardware you are working with.

Linux is kind of weird when it comes to drivers and stuff, so it's likely that your hardware isn't supported, or, perhaps, you are missing audio codecs/libraries.

A web search indicates that the Poulsbo chipset was a hot mess: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...tem&px=MTMyODA

Ubuntu 9.04 reached end of life a long time ago. No repos associated with it are likely still active.

I'd recommend that you test with a Live CD/USB of some other distro for ARM chips. Perhaps the driver problems have been resolved.

Hi Frank,

I would love to be using a supported distribution, however, as stated, it is impossible for me to upgrade - unless someone can help me get touchscreen drivers installed, and fix other issues that are guarnateed to arise. Although to be honest I am having no issues with current 9.04 remix but that which is the subject of this here thread.

If all hope is lost with this thread then making a thread about the possibilty of upgrading is something I will consider.

Unfortunately that is exactly the problem.
You cannot install new software on this. You should not ever connect it to the internet (extremely insecure).

All you can do is try to hunt down suitable packages from ~10 years ago and install those.

Was able to get Seamonkey 2.26 working fine with no effort needed, it is not the latest and greatest (Any verison newer does not work), but it is loading all websites without issue. The YouTube site loads in good time, but, as is the topic of this thread, videos will not play. Nor will any mp3 files online that I downloaded to test.

Touchscreen drivers are in the Linux kernel except for some truly outlying touchscreens. If a touchscreen is sensed, the kernel loads the appropriate driver.

Test with a Live CD/USB, you may well find that the touchscreen works okay.

Certain codecs exists which probably weren't installed by default. You need to install those to be able to play those media types. Normally grabbed by the players and sound editors when you install them. ffmpeg, sox, lame, faad, audacity, mpv, mplayer, ardour, xine, vlc, totem, ogre, ... ... ... Assuming any repos still exists for that dated distro. Sometimes distros come with optical drive image sets for the ENTIRE distro (at the time). So not all hope is lost I suppose. Using tasksel or dselect might help grab more generic dependencies. Otherwise get something modern installed if you can. Even if you have to gentoo or LFS things.

Frank - The touchscreen has not worked correctly on a single distribution I have tried (Tens of ones now at this point). Plenty of distributions do not even load on this device

Shadow_7 - What you say is interesting and sounds promising. What do you mean by "optical drive image sets for the ENTIRE distro"? And what is/are taskel or dselect? Thanks
