How can I Enable Direct Rendering in Intel 915 Express?

Hi to all... My name is Sharon and I'm a very fresh N00b In Linux.
Recently I've installed In my Laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo V2040) Ubuntu 6.10 - Everything went smooth EXCEPT the Driver for the Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express.

The problem began when I've tried to install beryl but apparently somehow the driver is not supporting Direct rendering...

Here's what I've got from glxinfo test:

Quote:
sharon@snoopy-laptop:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
sharon@snoopy-laptop:~$ "
Now... before this post I've Googeled ALOT... But Didn't Find any practical answer.

How do I enable the Direct Rendering function so I can have Beryl in my system? Any Suggestions anyone?

Sorry Sharon, that Intel 915 chip is a peice of junk, even under Winslows. 3d, DirectX, it just can't do it. At least that is the opinion in most of the Australian PC mags etc. Apparently there is no DirectX support on that chipset. Or at least it is very limited at best. Some body with a deeper knowledge than I have may say otherwise, and I shall defer to them if necessary.
Other than that I fear you may be stuck with what you have.

best wishes and good luck.

It can do it.

The 915 is a pretty decent chipset if your core focus is not gaming but lack of drivers from Intel makes it somewhat frustrating. Other than that applications work smoothly on my system, the only bit of problem I did have was with fixing the wide-screen issue.

You will find a good tutorial here.

It's generally a good idea to do a search and try to find someone who already has faced the same problem. In all probability once you find that, the solution will be there too. So save yourself all the typing / waiting and try searching the archives / googling for the subject matter before posting in.

Well Shorty... So Sorry to tell you but I've managed to play GTA SA [under windows of course] without any difficulty, I even done some simple 3D Rendering with it - so it's not such a junk as you say. Apparently it seems to me that the problem here is a lack of a sufficient driver for Linux Or a lack of guides to tell you what to do... Anyway that's my laptop and I'm stuck with it for now...

I'm going to keep looking and searching I believe that if it worked well under windows - I see no reason why it shouldn't work under Linux as well.

Beside that i really thing that the Ubuntu 6.10 is a super OS.
