help needed, loading custum distro on a USB thumb drive

hello all,
I am facing confusion regarding the following issue.
I intend to put a custom linux distro on a 256 mb USB thumb drive.
the USB stick will be internally attached to a USB poart on the embedded board I am using.
I will like to know how can I have a linux kernel v 2.6 with supporting alsa driver for my sound card (and I have the drivers) on a 256 USB thumb drive

Well your going to need alot more than that to make a bootable thumb drive. Have you looked at LFS?

Well, I actually am going through the book for lfs.
however I still can't figure out how I can put the custom distro on USB thumb drive.
I will certainly manage to compile the distro on my hard disk if I follow the instructions in the LFS documentation.
but after I make my lfs distro ready, I will like to transfer it on a USB pen drive.
thanks,
Krishnakant.

And when you get it working, remember to change your laptops BIOS to allow it to boot from USB thumb drive.
